A History of Pigeon Inlet Productions

Pigeon Inlet Productions was established in 1979 by Kelly Russell with the release of the LP : The Chronicles of Uncle Mose, stories of his father, the late Ted Russell. In the five years that followed, the company produced and released a series of 16 albums featuring over 70 of Newfoundland's finest folk musicians and storytellers.

The company's objective is the preservation and revitalisation of the traditional music and culture of Newfoundland, a unique and valuable expression of our identity. Many of the performers recorded by Pigeon Inlet Productions have since passed away, but their music survives through these recordings to be enjoyed by all.

Pigeon Inlet released 16 LPs and three 45rpms between 1979 and 1984. Then, as LP sales began to decline, some of the earlier recordings were re-released on cassette tape and, later CD. In 1988, the company released Newfoundland's first locally-produced CD : All The Best, a compilation of music from the St. John's area.

In subsequent years, Pigeon Inlet followed with other compilations : The highly acclaimed Another Time - The Songs of Newfoundland and Close To The Floor - Newfoundland Dance Music . Early in 1995 came Tall are the Tales - Newfoundland Stories & Recitations and Rufus Guinchard - Fathers of the Newfoundland Fiddle, Volume 1.

Pigeon Inlet's latest venture is the See Sounds CD/Cassette & Book Series. This new package includes a book with full text and musical notation of the contents of the CD or Cassette. Now when you purchase either Another Time, Close to the Floor, Tales from Pigeon Inlet, Rufus Guinchard, or Tall are the Tales, you will receive a book containing text, lyrics, musical notation and guitar chords to the recordings that they accompany.
